The WORST rental experience I have encountered in recent years

We want to WARN potential future tenants of the dishonest practices of Portia MIZZI (the owner changes her name very often in Airbnb recently like Leonarda, John…)

Here is the formal notice that our lawyer sent to Portia MIZZI and which she claims not to have received.

As our lawyer explains very well to Portia MIZZI:

• Failure to return a deposit for false reasons is likely to result in prosecution both civilly and criminally and offenses such as “breach of trust” and “blackmail” could be held against you;
• The absence of compliant delivery of accommodation with the description mentioned in the Airbnb ad is also likely to result in the cancellation of the entire reservation, further resulting in the reimbursement of all sums paid by my clients, in addition to damages.

Our misadventure in Portia MIZZI’s accommodation

Following a 3-month rental through Airbnb, Portia Mizzi asked us for a deposit of €250 which we had to pay before our arrival. As far as the rental goes, it was TERRIBLE (we explain in detail why below). We had to leave the rental after 2 weeks and urgently find other accommodation in Malta. We therefore also lost the cost of renting the remaining 15 days because we had paid for the month in advance, so around €750 extra.

The deposit of €250 was never returned to us even though we left the apartment in perfect condition and even left the electrical cards preloaded. Portia MIZZI admitted that we had left the place in order, here is the proof:

Portia Mizzi speaks here of the “return of money” yet she will refuse our request for reimbursement of €1000 the same day. She also refused to refund us only the €250 deposit because she had the option of making a counter-offer via Airbnb.

Response from Airbnb indicating that Portia MIZZI violated the regulations

Response from Airbnb indicating that Portia Mizzi violated the regulations by asking for a deposit outside their site and announcing that Airbnb would take possible sanctions against Portia Mizzi.

Airbnb also informs me that unfortunately it cannot force Portia Mizzi to reimburse us because we had paid the deposit outside their site. We were indeed naive to trust Portia Mizzi.

INCIDENT ENCOUNTERED with the rental

The house is separated into 2 parts by a simple interior door as well as glass doors opening onto the interior patio. The PROMISCUITY is total.

We had the misfortune of having noisy “long-term” tenants who occupied the other part of the house. Every morning we were woken up at 6:30 a.m. because they were leaving for work and making a lot of noise. In the evening and night, on several occasions, we were woken up by screams and shocks from people who were visibly drunk. We made sound and video recordings of these events.

The peaceful stay envisaged then turned into a source of permanent anxiety,
particularly for our son, then aged 12, who was continually awakened by the
cries and shocks caused by the other tenants.

In the photo on the left you can see the interior door leading to the other part of the accommodation. In the photo on the right we can see part of the windows of the other part of the accommodation overlooking the patio and therefore overlooking the living room and kitchen.

The title of the Airbnb ad says “entire accommodation” which is therefore completely false since it is an accommodation separated into two parts.

I surrounded the windows of the other part of the accommodation, including the one overlooking the bathroom where we could see the neighboring occupants taking a shower.

Failure to provide accommodation with the description mentioned in the Airbnb ad could also result in a full refund of our stay as well as damages.

POOR CONDITION of Portia MIZZI’s place

I am adding several photos here and I warn also potential future tenants of poor condition of Portia’s place.

You have to flush the toilet several times for it to work. The refrigerator is in very poor condition (torn seals…), the oven is very worn and low power, there is no microwave, there are very few dishes, very bad beds, the two bedrooms are in reality a single room separated by cupboards…

The patio is pretty with its plants but … the occupants of the other part of the house have their windows overlooking it and can therefore observe you… promiscuity is real and you can see them taking a shower, not very pleasant when you have a child.

The second part of the house has an entrance to another street but it’s the same house. Portia Mizzi lies and announces that she rents an entire accommodation!

Here is its address (51 Sibbien, Wied il-Għajn) and photos where we see the windows overlooking the patio as well as the bathroom where we can observe the other tenants in the shower.

The interior door leading to the other part of the accommodation is behind this curtain on the staircase.

Only very positive reviews for Portia MIZZI’s accommodations ?

We trusted the very positive reviews that we see on several websites (Airbnb, Google, etc.) when we reserved Portia Mizzi’s accommodation.

As we can see, there are no negative opinions regarding the accommodations rented by Portia MIZZI, but this does not correspond at all to our experience!

My wife and I left negative reviews to share our bad experience on various sites including Google, and they were all deleted.

Here for example is my Google review which no longer appears, I do not use any insulting terms and I simply describe our bad experience contrary to Portia Mizzi insulting and misleading response:

Today we understand better why we don’t see any negative reviews regarding Portia Mizzi’s accommodations because even ours negative reviews no longer appear!

We therefore created this site in order to share our bad experience and thus prevent other travelers from being fooled.
